A Look Into What Music Therapy Is…

Music therapy is an incredibly individualized form of therapy which uses music intervention to achieve various physical and mental wellness goals for those who partake in it. There is active music therapy which refers to people playing music in order to attain beneficial results, and also there is receptive music therapy which refers to people listening to music instead. Both of these forms of the therapy can yield effects such as:

  • Decreased stress, anxiety, and pain;

  • Enhanced memory and communication skills;

  • And, improved motor function

For this project, I decided to seek the mentorship of experts in the music therapy field and I was able to speak with Dr. Kristin Story, a licensed music therapist, as well as a professor at Eastern Michigan University. During our conversation, Story explained her own experience with the facilitation of music therapy. She shared about her work with veterans diagnosed with PTSD and their use of music therapy for chronic pain and trauma. Story shared how so many of her patients have expressed that music therapy has provided them another coping mechanism for their toolbox; it has allowed them to learn about mindfulness, checking in with oneself, and using music as a means of therapy for those areas that are needing to be remedied.
